About
HoldemDogs.com grew out of the 2004 World Series of Poker. I had never watched poker on TV before, or even heard of Texas Holdem for that matter. However on this Saturday my wife and I were bumming around the house when I stumbled across a WSOP marathon on ESPN. We must have watched at least 4 hours of coverage that day culminating with Greg Raymer’s victory over David Williams. Instantly, I was intrigued by this seemingly simple form of poker (little did I know) and the fact that both of these guys were not “professional” players. From that moment on, I was hooked.
That same day I began to scour the internet for all the information I could find on Texas Holdem. After reading dozens of articles, I purchased my first in a long line of books “Winning Low-Limit Hold’em” by Lee Jones. Initially, I wasn’t too crazy about the idea of playing online so I looked for some software to help me learn the game. I settled on a PC game called “DD Tournament Poker” available at www.ddpoker.com. It provides excellent desktop and internet play with a very similar feel to an online poker room. I would still recommend it today.
Within a short period of time though, the itch to play for real money was too great and I signed up at Poker Stars (Greg Raymer’s site of course). Since I also worked as a network administrator, starting a website seemed like a great way to make some extra money and tie it in with my new found love for poker. Thus, HoldemDogs.com was born.
Originally I had visions of a huge online community with thousands of “holdem dogs” logging on to post and chat about poker. However, with about a million poker sites online, I eventually realized I wasn’t going to strike it rich. My beloved HoldemDogs wasn’t going to be one of the great online communities, and the affiliate revenue wasn’t going to come pouring in. But, I still had this cool domain name.
So in 2008, “Holdem Dogs” was retooled to become “Holdem Dog’s”, a site for my blog. While the dream of running a huge poker site may have come and gone, the decision to get real and write about whatever’s on my mind was freeing. While I still run a few ads, I’m not that interested in affiliate revenues (they never amounted to much anyway). In fact, I may piss a few sites off from time, but so be it. To reverse a phrase from the Sopranos, “It’s not business, it’s just personal.”
So, welcome to the new HoldemDogs.com…
Sincerely,
StrayDawg
